Shielhill Glen

Walking Route

  • Distance1.5 Miles

Time: 1 hour

Route:

At the carpark go right to the start of the Greenock Cut and follow the signs. Go through the gate and downhill following the trail through the native trees along the Kip Water. At the bottom of the glen go through the gate and onto the boardwalk. The trail takes you up lots of steps, and once you reach the top, turn left along the Kelly Cut to return to the start at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre.

Terrain: Mixture of level gravel paths, steps and wooden board walk with steps over the moorland.

What to Bring: A camera to capture the the stunning views. A picnic to stop and take in the beautiful nature.

Look out for:

  • 2nd World War Light Emplacement – this is now an attractive picnic site with lovely views over the Clyde.
  • The Glen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the variety of deciduous trees such as Silver Birch, Oak, Ash and Rowan.
  • On the boardwalk, look out for lizards on the stone wall basking in the sunshine.
