Valentine’s Day in Inverclyde

Life in Inverclyde

Looking to wow that special someone in your life? Why not impress them with some of the most exceptional views of the West Coast of Scotland.

Walking dates are proving to be quite popular and with the weather forecast in the area set to be mild and dry (albeit cloudy, we can’t have it all), a romantic walk is just the perfect romantic activity. We suggest taking a walk up to Gourock Tower Hill – The vantage point over the Clyde and Argyllshire Hills is a sure winner at a historical site in the area. What more do you want?

4 Interesting Facts about Tower Hill to impress your date:

  1. The hill that the Tower sits in was once called “Drumshantie Hill” but since around 1897, the Ordinance Survey Maps list the hill name as “Tower Hill”.
  2. The Tower is a folly and was constructed in 1847. It is now an B listed building.
  3. A folly is a “a whimsical or extravagant structure built to serve as a conversation piece, lend interest to a view, commemorate a person or event, etc.: found especially in Great Britain in the 18th century.”
  4. The folly was commissioned by the Darroch family, who acquired the then “Barony of Gourock” in 1784

You can see a short aerial film of Tower Hill here:

Whilst visiting Gourock, there are a great number of boutique shops, restaurants and those all-important public houses aka pubs to enjoy a dram or 2.

Our Top choices:

  • Gift Shop – Pirate and the Bluebell
  • Specialised Gifts – The Whisky Rooms on Kempock Street
  • Restaurants – Dinner at Buckley’s Small Plates
  • Ice cream – Bluebird Cafe
