Newark Castle

Heritage & History

A Jacobean Gem

To call a 15th-century building a ‘new wark’ – hence Newark Castle – seems odd today but in the late 1400s, that’s how it was known!

Situated on the outskirts of the town of Port Glasgow, beside the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde and close by the Newark Roundabout on the A8, you will find Newark Castle.

If you like Scottish castles with dark stories, then this is one for you!

Pop along to Newark Castle and see some exquisite Jacobean details on the exterior, wonder at the breathtaking views across the Clyde and see how the other half and their servants lived in the 16th century.

The castle is open in spring and summer and visitors can explore ‘upstairs and downstairs’ and look for ‘my lady’s chamber’ where Sir Patrick Maxwell imprisoned his spouse.
