Open Water Swimming

There is something very special about open water swimming. It is a way to connect with the natural world, and where better to try, than in the beautiful Firth of Clyde.

But it is important to do this safely and with the support of others.

The Royal West Scotland Amateur Boat Club (RWSABC) welcomes everyone who is interested in open water swimming, 12 years and above.

Whether you enjoy open water swimming for the intimate contact with nature, simply want to keep fit or are interested in training for competitive purposes, our local club aims to make their swimming events friendly and sociable.

Our local open water swimmers assure us that, once acclimatised, swimming in the sea off Greenock is invigorating!

So why not give it a go!

Most swimmers at RWSABC wear wet suits but others do not.  The choice is up to you.  All the swims are in and around the Boat Club on the Esplanade, one of the best sea swimming venues in Scotland.

The advantages that it offers compared to some other locations include several places of safe egress, relatively sheltered conditions and very little powered boat traffic.  It helps that the views across the river can be stunning!

One of the ‘attractions’ of open water swimming is cold water and the water temperature of the Clyde varies between 6°  C in February to 15° C in September.  And some of our local swimmers participate all year-round.
