The Comet

The Comet was built in 1812 at John Woods shipyard in Port Glasgow for entrepreneur Henry Bell, a hotel and pool owner. Later that same year, on 15 August 1812, Europe’s first commercial steam ship service began. The Comet provided a passenger service between Glasgow and Greenock three days per week, which attracted some notable passengers, including Sir Walter Scott and James Watt.
