Galoshans Festival goes online for 2020!

For 2020, Inverclyde’s Galoshans Festival gets creative with zoom workshops, exclusive online performances, live streaming and outdoor activities. Celebrating the Year of Coasts and Waters with a sea-faring watery theme, the festival, now in its six year takes a break from the annual Galoshans giants parade and street party to focus on creative community workshops and enjoyable events that can safely take place online, or with physical distancing outdoors.
Galoshans Festival invites residents across Inverclyde to get involved in spreading Hallowe’eny joy by dressing up their windows in the run up to Hallowe’een to form the “Oot the Windae” Galoshans Window Art Trail. Creative online Window Art Workshops run via zoom with RIG Arts every Sunday throughout October to provide inspiration and creative ideas for all ages to try.
Keep your eyes peeled for pop up performances and art installations in outdoor spaces throughout Galoshans Festival.
Join in with RIG Arts workshops and help to bring the streets alive with Water Activated Street Art, and Fixing Fashion Art Installations that challenge the fashion industry and make use of waste materials. Follow the work of budding comic book artists at Magic Torch Comics and get involved in creating spooky stories and tall tales.
Newly commissioned pop-up performances by Inverclyde Youth Theatre (Kayos) and Surge Street Theatre introduce the strange statue-like Concreatures and don their fancy dress as an assortment of out of place characters in Captain Amethyst and the Super Awesome Galactic TV heads from Outer Space 2: The Revenge of Charlie Chaplin.
Local architect Bruce Newlands returns to the festival with TRANCND. These portable digital projections will light up local landmarks with streaming images, taking influence from sea monsters and tales of the deep, to mark the Year of Coasts and Waters.
Reflections: Artist led Poetry Walks offer an opportunity to get out in the fresh air and consider new perspectives on local surroundings. Local artists Alexander ‘Twig’ Champion, Rebecca Livesey Wright & Katharine Macfarlane will lead these physically distanced walks.
Galoshans Festival presents 5 local musicians for a series of exclusive Galoshans Gigs! filmed live in the spookily atmospheric Tobacco Warehouse to view from the comfort of your own living room. Tune in online from 7pm on Friday 23rd & 30th, Saturday 24th & 31st for performances from Lola in Slacks, Lynette Beaton, Lynnie Carson, Jim Creighton & The Clementines. The festival will also be showcasing new material from participants of RIG Arts SHE | PLAYS project.
No Nonsense Productions & Beacon Arts Centre host an evening of Hallowe’en fun on Friday 30th October with Dracula; A Radio Play on Stage, filmed at Wellpark Mid- Kirk Church, followed by a live interactive Hallowe’en zoom quiz to join in with.
Keep a weather eye on the Beacon and social media for Streams of Consciousness live from the Beacon balcony, as local pianist Sian Campbell and classical singer Abhisri Chaudhuri perform against the backdrop of TRANCND projections and scenic art.
Visit the Beacon Arts Centre on the waterfront to feed imaginations with The Monster Mash and bewitch young minds with Ghost Stories around the Campfire, Ghoulish Games and a dramatic investigation into The Witches of Crow Mount.
Inverclyde’s Libraries present an online Spooky Bookbug, invite entries to their Zombie Pirates Mini Shipbuilding Challenge and host the Making Waves Online Exhibition & Recital. The Watt Institution opens a special exhibition of Egyptian artefacts exploring “Magic of the ancient world” from the 28th of October.
