Countdown on to this weekend’s Gourock Highland Games 2026

The countdown is well and truly on to this year’s Gourock Highland Games with less than a week to go till the big event.

Organised by Inverclyde Council, the free Gourock Highland Games in Battery Park on Sunday 10 May are the first of the Scottish season.

The 68th games have three main strands: the heavies competition, featuring both male and female competitors; the West of Scotland Highland Dance Championships; and the pipe band competition.

Alongside that are a host of delicious food stalls, traders and community groups, the Active Schools mini Highland games, a funfair and much more!

This year’s chieftain, campaigning Clydeview Academy pupil Cameron McGerr, said he’s looking forward to the day.

He said: “It feels like not long ago I was asked to be chieftain and now the day is nearly here.

“I can see how much hard work goes into organising an event of this size so well done to everyone involved.

“I’m looking forward to the day and being the chieftain is the icing on the cake.”

Finnie, the official mascot of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, will be at Battery Park giving out high-fives to locals and visitors.

The culture and heritage marquee will have a wide range of activities suitable for all ages including popular Bookbug sessions for wee ones and their families. There will also be Love Your Library where you can find out all about what your local library has to offer; Love Local Heritage will explore the history of Gourock Outdoor Pool and also commemorate the 85th anniversary of the Greenock Blitz with a silent disco featuring 1940s music; and Highland folk tales with Archaeology Scotland.

There will be a new birds of prey display, a Come and Try Circus Skills tent and local Scouts will be serving up hot drinks and treats in the tea tent.

Inverclyde Active Schools’ mini Highland Games will involve youngsters from local schools, and there will be fun for the whole family including funfair rides, a climbing wall, bungee trampolines and much more.

Gourock Highland Games take place in Battery Park on Sunday 10 May from 12noon till 6pm and is free to attend.

Parking is very limited on the day and visitors are encouraged to use public transport. The nearest train station is Fort Matilda and Battery Park is well served by local buses. Visitors can also pop on the popular McGill’s open-topped bus tours from Battery Park along the scenic Inverclyde coastline to McInroy’s Point and back on the day.
