Station to Station

Cycling & Walking Route

  • Distance8 Miles
  • Average elevation60m
  • Max elevation182m

Estimated time : 4-5 hours.

The Route:

This linear walk connects two railway stations on the Wemyss Bay Clyde Coast railway line. Start at Drumfrochar station and head right on Peat Road towards Overton primary school. On Papermill Rd go through a small car park taking you steeply uphill towards the white building of Overton Cottage. Pass through the kissing gate and take the path right following the Greenock Cut aqueduct for 6.5km. Stop off at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre for a quick break and have a look at our interactive exhibition explaining the facinating story behind the engineering feat of the Cut. To access the Kelly Cut cross the stone bridge, walk for 20m then turn right through a gate onto the earthen path that continues for 5km across the moorland. As you approach the Kelly Reservoir the path takes a sharp right and continues down the glen following the Kelly Burn, past the caravan park to Wemyss Bay train station.

Terrain: Rough Moor and Track, mostly unpaved.

Shorten the route: Cross the Overton track to the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre.

Prefer cycling? Why not take your mountain bike or hybrid bike along this route as an alternative to walking.

Look out for:

  • On this walk you’ll explore the historic Greenock and Kelly Cut aqueducts built by Robert Thom in 1820’s to provide water for the people and industries of Greenock.
  • Enroute there you may come across sheep, buzzards, butterflies, hen harriers and occasionally golden eagles
  • Stop off in Wemyss Bay for a well earned tea break before you set off on the second half of the walk.
